Hello and welcome to Brigham Young University Idaho, Art 230 - Typography.
In Typography Class we explore fonts and create abstract and representational compositions while learning how to create systems of typographical hierarchy. Using design principles in class are foundational to creating legible and dynamic typographic compositions.

We have 4 projects each semester.
1. Abstract glyph composition: sans serif & serif compositions 6.75"x8"
2. Personal business card: 3.5"x2" front and back
3. Font poster: 16"x20"
4. Gift booklet: 12 pages, 7"x10"

In class we work on design principles such as creating a focal point and discovering the power of negative space. Creating a clear focal point communicates to the reader that you are in change of the design and sets the scene for establishing typographical hierarchy. Intentionally creating negative space aids in elevating design elements and supporting typographical hierarchy.

Type is found all around us in the world. Art 230 will help you discover how widely it's used and new ways to communicate with different fonts. Each font has a different personality and as you discover individual characteristics you'll learn how to harness the power of graphic communication.
